Al’s Oatmeal Stout

Brewed this one last week.  Checked it a couple days ago, looking good!  Will bottle in around a week or so.

  • 10 lbs maris otter
  • 1 lb crystal 60
  • 0.5 lb crystal 120
  • 1 lb chocolate malt
  • 0.5 lb roasted barley
  • 2 lb oatmeal
  • 3 oz serebrianka hops (2.3% AA) at 60
  • 5 oz serebrianka hops (2.3% AA) at 15
  • OG 1.065
  • SRM 36
  • ABV 6.7
  • IBU 35

There are three orders within the class Amphibia; Anura (frogs and toads), Caudata (salamanders) and Gymnophiona (caecilians). Caecilians are the least well-known group even though there are 184 known species with a widespread distribution in Africa, Asia, South and Central America. They have the appearance of worm-like snakes and can be small like worms or up to 1.5 meters. Caecilians can be fossorial or aquatic and below there is a video of each example.

One Eyed Doll

Now I know this is basically a beer blog, and I mostly talk about beer and homebrew, but on occasion I may wish to diverge or derail my own blog.  If you don’t like it, then I suggest youneedta have a beer and try relaxing for a change.  Because Kimberly Freeman totally kicks ass, and One-Eyed Doll is a band to inspire anyone (who’s not dead already)!

I play in a metal band, and thus I like to check out other bands, and of course I just plain like music in so very many forms.  I’ve been a big fan of this band for a while, but I feel the need to blog it, and post some links.

On a slightly ironic note, Kimberly doesn’t even drink, but hey, pobody’s nerfect, eh?  I love you Kimberly!

Mini-Batch of Weird Saison-ish extract/mini-mash Beer Strangeness

Decided to try a mini-batch of weird beer today in my old Mr Beer keg, approximately 2.4 gallons.  Used the following ingredients:

  • 1 lb 6-row
  • 8 oz maris otter
  • 4 oz caramel 20
  • 4 oz caramel 60
  • 4 oz flaked corn
  • 0.9 oz honey malt
  • 2 lbs Amber Dry Extract (Munton’s)

Hops:

  • 1 oz willamette mash hop
  • 0.5 oz tettnanger 60 minutes
  • 1.5 oz tettnanger 1 minute

Misc:

  • campden (to guard against chloramines in water)

Yeast:

  • T-58 saison yeast

I honestly have no idea what the heck I’ve made here.  It did taste, smell, and look like it’ll probably become beer after it’s done fermenting!  But we’ll find out in about a month!

UPDATE: it’s ready, and it’s delicious!!  Very saison-y but not at all dry (which is a little odd, but hey, it works).  Next up for the mini-batches will be something along these lines, but with extra-dark Munton’s extract!
